It is indeed eerie to think of the Franklin remains scattered about that desolate landscape. Some searchers, like Chief Trader William Gibson, made efforts to inter the remains during their excursions to KWI. Otherwise, it's like an open graveyard of the gloomiest sort!

You're right--even if we never get a definitive ID on that skeleton, we at least know that it's back on British soil!

Thank you so much for becoming a follower!Jaeschylushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12204972787032135611noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4023802902969232490.post-62106390136823195282013-06-01T14:43:13.234-07:002013-06-01T14:43:13.234-07:00Very good post, thank you.

Hello, may I come in? =)
Fantastic...*knock knock*
Hello, may I come in? =)

Fantastic post, Jess! I particularly like the warfare analogy. The thought of the remains of the Franklin crew being scattered all across the Arctic is definitely gloomy, yet romantic in a decadent way. It's like they are almost still waiting to be rescued, one way or another.
I hope the mystery of the Greenwich skeleton is solved someday (although it's almost certain that those remains are not Le Vesconte's), but at least it's a bit reassuring to know that one of the guys came back home...

Happy Memorial Day, by the way :)Beatriz Garrido https://www.blogger.com/profile/15060031054772906853noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4023802902969232490.post-89449592391840244642013-05-26T22:28:56.349-07:002013-05-26T22:28:56.349-07:00Thanks, Andres, for your kind words & poignant...Thanks, Andres, for your kind words & poignant sentiments! It's a nice scenario to imagine. I like to think that, no matter what happened in that frigid wasteland, the officers and men retained their devotion to each other. Without images of the officers of HMS Terror for comparison (with the exceptions of Crozier and McDonald), it's hard to tell just whose bones they are!Jaeschylushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12204972787032135611noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4023802902969232490.post-60166715560452968222013-05-26T05:32:22.418-07:002013-05-26T05:32:22.418-07:00Nice Post Jaeschylous!! I wonder if James Fitzjames was alive to give this man the last farewell, one of his good friends (if at the end he was indeed Le Vesconte. If this was the case, I am sure that James spilt some tears in front of his grave.Andrés Paredeshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17283802897907742244noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4023802902969232490.post-32401582008274221832013-05-25T23:27:12.875-07:002013-05-25T23:27:12.875-07:00Good post. :) I particularly like the lines of O&#...Good post. :) I particularly like the lines of O'Hara's poem.
